Charles House
Designed for an in-fill lot in suburban Charlotte, this mid-century inspired home boasts 4 bedrooms, 3-½ baths, an expansive chef’s kitchen, an internal courtyard, and massive peninsula fireplace. The post-and-beam construction allows for large viewing windows at eye-level, clerestory windows above for ample natural light, and of course, the beautiful rhythm of exposed beams on both interior and exterior.
The plan is organized around a long hallway – the spine of the project – which connects the front and back doors. At the entry, this hall carries the occupant to the kitchen, dining and living rooms. The bench hearth that surrounds the fireplaces separates the dining and living spaces, but still allows for transparency and connection. A sliding glass door opposite the living room takes one to a covered patio area and side yard.
Beyond the living room, an internal courtyard signals the transition from public to private along the hall, and it continues to the bedrooms of the house. The primary suite features a double-loaded walk-in closet, a full bathroom with water closet and soak tub, and access to the courtyard space. The three other bedrooms sit opposite the primary with their own respective bathrooms.
