Jefferson House

This speculative project is set on a quiet street, above a very popular area within the River Arts District in Asheville. High on the hillside on an in-fill lot, the site has long-range views towards downtown and the rest of the RAD, and is amply above the flood plain.

Due to the small size of the lot and its steepness, it was entirely possible to design a house with no practical outdoor access. So, it became an important design charge for the project to create outdoor connections on each floor. As such, the house opens itself to its southern side, towards the views, and holds a series of terraced decks and patios. The roof deck on top of the house further maximizes the outdoor space and takes advantage of the best views.

The ground level of the home has a garage and entry vestibule. Up the stairs, the first level has two bedrooms, each with side-deck access, a bathroom, and the laundry. Continuing up, the second level is the main – with kitchen/dining/living spaces. These spaces connect to another side deck and patio. Up another level, is the primary suite, with walk-in closet, full bathroom with soak tub, and its own private balcony off the side. Finally, from the third floor, one can access a spiral stair to the roof deck.
